A large part of Peace Like a River involves the concept of miracles. This page discusses miracles in the book, and how they affect the main characters.
Quotes:
"I believe I was preserved, through those twelve airless minutes, in order to be a witness, anda witness, let me say that a miracle is no cute thing but more like the swing of a sword."-pg.4
This quote shows the first miracle that Rueben encountered. It shows that Rueben takes the miracles that his father produces seriously. This quote seems to be foreshadowing the fact that Rueben is a witness, and a mature one. He understands what is going on when he sees the miracles that his father produces.
"I now think of my survival as my father's first miracle."-pg.5 This quote is definately foreshadowing the miracles to come. It also shows that Rueben sees what his father does as miracles, rather than super hero powers, etc.. Mr. Land saved Rueben, and started the sub-subject of the novel, which is Mr.Land's miraculous occurrences. This shows the how the miracles affect the other characters because it shows how Mr. Land's miracles caused Rueben to survive. Without these miracles, Rueben would have been dead.
"And then, as I stood watching, Dad walked right off the edge of the truck."-pg. 17 Rueben is a witness to his father's miracles. Mr. Land, with God's help, walked off the truck without falling. This miracle, which shocked Rueben to no end, proved even more that his father could do things that not many others could do. Rueben flat out states what was happening, as a witness there must have seemed to be no way to explain it. It seems that there is not, for the event is nothing short of extraordinary.
"A small pot of soup... how the pot was replenished as though from a well... I felt a surprising weight in the faithful vessel and, lifting the lid, beheld a pot still more then half full of our king of soups."-pg. 47 This shows how Mr. Land truely affects the people around him. The family had barely enough soup, plus a guest, and the soup fed them all with more than one helpings and half a pot left over. Mr. Land provided for more people than could be provided for. This relates to the Bible story where there was not enough fish or bread for the crowd, but Jesus made the little food they had enough for everyone with a lot left over. Mr. Land's miracles relate to the Bible a lot in the novel, and he helps the people around him.
"And Dad said, Because I was praying this morning; and I prayed Lord, send Davy home to us; or if not, Lord, do this: send us to Davy."-pg.128 Mr.Land obviously has a lot of faith in God. He believes that God will help them find Davy, and because of previous occasions, it may work for the Lands. Mr. Land has faith and believes that he can help the family with his prayers, and they have helped him before. Praying seems to be Mr. Land's way of producing miracles, for it is what he was doing during almost all of them. This picture relates to the miracles in Peace Like a River because, on page 17 Jeremiah seemingly walked off the back of his truck and began hovering. As Reuben passed his father, he witnessed the miracle.
Q1.) How do these miracles effect the plot in Peace Like A River? Explain in great detail! These miracles effect the plot of Peace LIke A River by helping the Land's find a way to Davy. One miracle that helped them is when the Land's drove by every gas station and "dodged" every trooper that was staitioned there to find them. Also, they finally find Davy by God leading them to Jermiah.
Q2.) Make a prediction about how these miracles might help the Lands find Davy. Use supporting details from the novel! I predict that Jermiah will stay at Roxanne becuase God told him unitl Davy finds them. Also, I think Jermiah will walk on air with the fmaily to escape Andreeson. Finally I think God will guide them to a new journey from escaoing the authorties. Q3.) Explain Reuben's reaction to his father on the night paranormal activity. When Jeremiah had that paranormal night Reuben was astonished. Unsure of what was really going on Reuben did not know what to do in comparison to the awesome sight.
